Beyond the Award: Building a Family of Vision in Business
Last week was one of those moments that make you pause, breathe, and reflect.
When I stood on stage at the Small Business Awards and heard my name called not once, but twice, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. To be named among the Top 20 Entrepreneurs in South Africa and recognised as the Entrepreneur Champion for 2025 was an incredible honour.
But here’s what I need you to understand. Those awards were not for me alone. They were not for the Firewalks, the Keynotes, or the Coaching sessions I’ve delivered across countries. They were for something far deeper than the business that my team and I have built together, Cobus Visser International.
For the past three years, we’ve participated in the Bizshow exhibition. Each year, we learned, refined, and improved. This year, we did it again and we entered for the awards. Out of more than 6,500 competitors, our business stood among the top twenty. That victory was not a fluke. It was the result of persistence, structure, trust, and the one thing that has shaped everything we do, family.
The Business Behind the Brand
People know me as a Coach, a Firewalking Instructor, a Keynote Speaker, or a Consultant. They see the Firewalks, the retreats, the energy. But before all of that, I’m a businessman.
Cobus Visser International is not just a brand. It’s a living, breathing organisation built on systems, structure, and people who share one heartbeat. Every service we deliver, every breakthrough we help create, is backed by a team that knows exactly what they are building and why.
The truth is, you can’t grow a business alone. You might start it alone, but if you want it to last, you need to build systems and bring in people who can multiply your vision. Over the years, we’ve created systems that keep us aligned through weekly check-ins, daily stand-ups, and structured feedback loops that ensure everyone knows their role and how it connects to the bigger picture.
Those systems don’t just keep us organised. They keep us connected. They turn chaos into rhythm and ideas into results.
Redefining the Family Business
When people hear “family business,” they often picture bloodlines and surnames. But I’ve learned that family in business goes far beyond genetics.
Family is the group of people who see your vision and decide to make it theirs too. It’s the people who show up when things get hard, who celebrate your wins as if they were their own, and who carry the dream even when you’re not in the room.
The team you see in the photo, the one standing with me holding those awards, they are my family. Not by birth, but by purpose. Each one of them has brought something unique to this business. Some joined us recently; others have been here for years. All of them share the same commitment to excellence, to service, and to growth.
We don’t always agree. Like any family, we have conflict, we have debates, and we have moments of tension. But we’ve built systems that allow us to navigate those moments with respect, clarity, and understanding. That’s what family does: they face the fire together.
Systems Build Success
There’s a saying I live by: “Discipline sets you free.”
In business, that discipline is called systems. Without structure, passion burns out. Without rhythm, momentum fades. Systems give creativity a container to thrive in.
Our weekly alignment meetings keep everyone focused on what matters. Our daily stand-ups create a rhythm of accountability and communication. We track projects, share progress, and celebrate wins in real time.
These aren’t corporate rituals. They’re our heartbeat. They ensure that no one drifts, that everyone knows their lane, and that the company moves forward together.
Systems don’t kill freedom, they create it. They allow me, as the founder, to focus on growth while trusting that the team is executing with excellence.
Leadership Is Shared
Winning these awards reminded me of something simple but profound: leadership is not about doing everything yourself. It’s about building people who can lead beside you.
I might be the face of the company, but I am not the company. The real strength of Cobus Visser International lies in the people behind the scenes, the Business Development Manager, the Branding and Marketing Manager, the Administrator, the Creative & Entertainment Manager and the Business Partners. The ones who keep the fire burning long after the event ends.
True leadership is not measured by how much you carry, but by how much you can empower others to carry with you.
Family. Vision. Legacy.
I’ve always believed that legacy is built together. This award, for me, is not a personal victory. It’s proof of what can happen when a group of people align behind a shared purpose and commit to doing whatever it takes.
It’s proof that a business becomes unstoppable when it starts to think and operate like a family, not in sentiment, but in solidarity.
To every entrepreneur reading this: your business will grow in proportion to your systems, your people, and your ability to turn colleagues into family. Build systems that create rhythm. Build teams that share a vision. Build a culture where respect and accountability live side by side.
Because when that happens, success stops being an event. It becomes a lifestyle.
To my team: thank you. You are more than colleagues, you are the family that made this possible. These awards have my name on them, but they belong to all of us.
